FAQ'S

  • How much does medical certificate cost?
This is detailed in the Fees information but the total cost varies as it depends on what is required. All aviation Medicals needs an examination and an assessment but the other investigations (ECG, audiogram, optometrist report, spirometry, blood tests) are only required at certain ages or not at all.
  • What do I need to bring with me to the examination?
If this is the first time that I have examined you, then you need to bring some form of photo identification. If you wear contacts then you will need to be tested with these in and also with them out so bring your contact lens cases with you.
  • Should I apply for a Private Pilot certificate first and then upgrade to a commercial certificate a few years later?
It is actually cheaper in the long run to do both at the start, because the only extra things required for a Commercial certificate are the eye report and the audiogram. However, should you apply for a Private certificate and then upgrade later you need to repeat all the investigations (ECG, blood tests, spirometry) as well as the audiogram & eye report?
  • For how long is a medical certificate valid?
This depends on whether commercial or private, your age, any medical conditions, but we can make some generalisations: A Class 1 (commercial) certificate lasts for 12 months until age 40 years. After this a medical is then needed every six months for commercial solo pilot flying. A Class 2 is valid for 5 years until age 40 when it then becomes every 2 years.
  • If I lose my certificate do I get a replacement from my medical Examiner?
No, I cannot send a replacement. The replacement can ony be issued by CAA and there is a form that you will need to complete. The replacement application is available here or in the document section of this website.
  • How long does a medical examination/assessment take?
These usually take about 30 to 45 minutes if the 4 page application form is completed before you attend. The assessment and processing the paperwork then takes anywhere from a further 30 minutes to an hour.
  • My medical is about to expire soon - what can I do?
Providing there are no new medical problems, then it is possible to grant an extension for a maximum of two months. This then gives you time to organise an appointment.
  • If I have an examination but there is still 30 days before my certificate expires, when does the new certificate expire?"
If there is 30 days or less before the certificate expires, then the new one starts from the expiry date of the old certificate. In other words, you do not lose any time on the new certificate. So, don't leave things until just before the certificate expires.
  • If I need corrective lenses (contacts, spectacles) can I still get a certificate?"
Corrective lenses are fine including progressives but, at the moment, only single correction contacts are allowed. In other words you can’t wear progressive contact lenses.
  • What about asthma?
Asthma does not prevent you getting a medical certificate even if taking medication - providing it is well controlled. You will normally need a follow up spirometry at each medical.
  • If I have had a coronary artery bypass or stent so can I get a medical certificate?
This is trickier and is treated on a case by case basis, but is possible.

The good thing is that he came to us as we are not based in Central Otago. Pays to ring up and check where he goes.
